People & power

Article 1 of the Constitution of Kenya: Sovereign Power of the People.

The adoption of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya was largely driven by citizens’ desire to reclaim control over their country’s governance. For many years, power had been concentrated in the hands of a small political elite, which limited meaningful citizen influence in national decision-making. The constitutional reform process, therefore, aimed to restore the principle that the nation ultimately belongs to its people and that leadership must operate with their consent and participation.

Citizens’ Rights.

  1. Participate in political processes
  2. Engage public institutions through petitions or advocacy
  3. Vote in elections and present themselves as candidates for leadership positions

Challenges of Implementing Meaningful Participation

  1. Delays in sharing parliamentary reports,
  2. limited access to information.
  3.  Bureaucratic processes can make it difficult for citizens to engage effectively.
